Introducing Giancarlo Montes Santangelo (lives and works in New York), one of the artists participating in New Poetics of Labor 2018.

Giancarlo Montes Santangelo’s interests are rooted in photography and  its possibilities and limits. After finding a photograph of his dad dressed up as Santa and hearing the story of his siblings’ confusion as to why Santa was brown, he began to investigate the power of the image. This moment marked an awareness, both of his own body and that of his fathers. Montes is interested that disjuncture; the moments in which bodies and subjects aren’t coherently seen and, as a result, are marked as non-normative. He works with photography to describe these slippages and develop a language to address these experiences.
